It was founded in 1956 as the second public university in Zhejiang Province. It was formerly named Hangzhou Institute of Electrical Engineering and was renamed in 2004. HDU is administered directly by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Provincial Government. It emphasizes the disciplines of engineering, economics, sciences and arts. It has more than 40 research institutions and enrolls 28000 students with 2200 faculty and staff.
